Tipton Statement on National Emergency Declaration
Many Republicans and Democrats alike agree on the need for strengthened border security, and it is unfortunate that Congressional Democrat leaders have so far refused to seriously address the issue. That said, I do believe that it needs to go through the legislative process as outlined in the Constitution and not by an Executive Branch action. Such action could set a precedent, further concentrating power in the Executive Branch and eroding the carefully constructed system of checks and balances in the Constitution. I believe it is important that Congress exercises its responsibility in addressing the longstanding issue of border security, and I call on Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer to come to the table and get to work.
