Tipton Statement on Opening of New Aurora VA Facility

July 21, 2018
Press Release

WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, Congressman Scott Tipton (CO-03) made the following statement after the opening of the 1-million-square-foot Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado:

“We are fortunate to have so many brave veterans in Colorado and across the nation, all of whom deserve the best care possible,” said Tipton. “This project will go down as one of the most mismanaged bureaucratic boondoggles in memory, but at least with its long overdue completion it will finally be put into action to serve veterans and help the medical professionals at the VA carry out a critical mission of providing quality, timely care to veterans.”

Background:

In 2004, the federal government called for the VA to move from downtown Denver to a stand-alone facility in Aurora. The construction for this project began in 2012, with an opening date of 2015 announced. However, the project was just recently completed this year and was $1 billion over budget.

Outpatient services will move from the Denver facility to the new Aurora facility on July 27th. The modern spinal cord injury unit will not open for another six months.
