Tipton Hydropower Bill Cruises through Natural Resources Committee

WASHINGON D.C. – During a committee markup, the Natural Resources Committee today passed with bipartisan support H.R. 2842, the Bureau of Reclamation Small Conduit Hydropower Development and Rural Jobs Act of 2011, introduced by Rep. Scott Tipton (CO-03).  Now the bill will go to the House floor for a vote.

The legislation eliminates burdensome red tape and reduces administrative costs for the installation of increased small canal and pipeline hydropower development projects. Increased small hydropower installation will create local jobs, add clean, inexpensive electricity to the grid and supply the federal government with additional revenues while modernizing infrastructure.

“We need to be focused on providing clean renewable energy while expanding job opportunities in this country,” said Rep. Tipton. “If enacted, this legislation will eliminate duplicative regulatory paperwork, effectively streamlining the development of small hydropower projects and creating badly needed jobs in rural America.”

The Family Farm Alliance, the National Water Resources Association and the American Public Power Association have endorsed the bill.
