Tipton Statement on Improving Public Safety
WASHINGTON — Today, Rep. Scott Tipton (R-CO) issued this statement on improving public safety and preventing acts of mass violence.
“As we work at the federal, state and community levels to protect our children and all innocent citizens from horrific acts of violence like those at Sandy Hook and in Aurora, our focus must be on identifying and acting on the root causes of these tragedies. Over the past months there have been legislative actions across this country, including in Colorado, that I am concerned will not achieve these ends or address the underlying issues that lead to violent acts.
“While I believe it is critical that we keep weapons out of the hands of criminals and high-risk individuals, more must be done to ensure that those who are suffering from mental illness receive proper care and are never in a position to commit violent acts. Additionally, we cannot overemphasize the role that parents and community leaders play in prevention efforts, including identifying the warning signs that often foreshadow violent acts.
“Narrowly focused policies that restrict law-abiding citizens’ access to firearms and ammunition are not effective or responsible actions to prevent the tragedies we have seen, and raise serious Constitutional concerns. I urge our elected officials at every level to join me in working toward policy that appropriately analyzes and addresses the causes of violent acts, so that we prevent these tragedies from happening again, and ensure that our schools are safe havens for our children. Trampling on the 2nd Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens will not achieve those ends.”
